Whether it’s a day by the pool, cycling with your kids in the park or enjoying summer cocktails at a chic rooftop, these summer wardrobe essentials will help you curate different looks that are sustainable in every way. Sustainable not only in terms of how they’ve been made but also in terms of versatility so that you can style these pieces to create a multitude of looks.

This post is all about sustainable summer wardrobe ideas.

Summer Wardrobe Ideas
Summer Wardrobe Ideas that are luxuriously comfortable all while being responsible.

Items 1 and 5- The White Tank

A white tank top is a summer wardrobe essential. Wear it with jeans, shorts, a linen skirt or cotton pants, and voila, effortless summer dressing!

This Reformation piece is made predominantly from organic cotton, a sustainable buy that should last you many summers.

Item 2 – Linen Trousers

Linen is one of the best fabrics you can invest in for those warm summer days. Made from the flax plant which has a much lower water footprint, not only is linen one of the most sustainable fabrics, its breathability and moisture-wicking ability make it perfect for summer.

These linen trousers are from Reformation. White is my favourite for the summer but there’s lots of other colours you can choose too.

Item 3- An oversized linen shirt

If you’re anything like me, I’m not a fan of getting my arms burnt, and an oversized linen shirt is just what I swear by to save my arms.

This boyfriend shirt from With Nothing Underneath is a 100% linen, and can be dressed up or dressed down. Wear it with a pair of jeans and loafers for running errands or wear it as an overshirt with a cute summer dress. This shirt can do a lot for your look and comfort on those warm summer days.

Item 4- A cute linen dress

Choose a sustainable and cute dress for those sunlit hours. This Pomona linen dress from Reformation is 100% linen. A responsible luxury piece that’ll make heads turn every summer.

Item 6 – An elegant linen skirt

There’s nothing I love more than an elegant skirt that makes me feel feminine without seeming uptight. The Carolina linen skirt from Reformation is midi length and has a beautiful lace hem. This is a piece that could work even beyond the warmer months. Pair it with a light jumper and voila you have something as we transition to autumn.

Item 8 – Summer shorts

A pair of linen shorts or shorts in any other breathable material  is an absolute summer wardrobe staple for those relaxing beach days. This pair of Mason shorts from Reformation are made from TENCEL Lyocell, a highly breathable, sustainable fabric made from renewable wood pulp. This fabric is also a lot more durable than other fabrics as its less prone to shrinking or pilling. Team these with a tank for a casual vibe or a shirt in the same colour for a cool yet classy summer look.

Item 9- Eco-friendly sunglasses

It’s easy to be so focussed on sustainable clothing and forget about accessories. The good news is that now you can make responsible choices when it comes to accessories as well. For example, inspired by the Isle of Wight’s coastline, these seaview unisex sunglasses made by Rapanui in collaboration with Waterhaul are made from polypropylene trawl nets and lines. Once you’ve given them all your love (hopefully for many summers 😊) close the loop by returning them to be recycled into new sunglasses.

Items 10 and 12- Sustainable summer sandals

Warmer weather calls for comfortable footwear your feet, and toes will thank you for.  When trying to ascertain if the footwear you’re looking to buy is ethical,  look for indicators like the use of low impact materials such as natural and biodegradable materials or plant based leather alternatives, fair manufacturing practices, circularity, repairability and classic designs built to last.

These summer sandals from Wills Vegan Shoes London (Two Strap Sandals) and from Stella McCartney (Giai Thong Flat Sandals) fit the bill. I’ve tried footwear from both these brands and can definitely vouch for them. What I love about Wills’ is the affordability without having to compromise on quality, but if you’re looking for a special treat for yourself then the Stella sandals are gorgeous too!

Items 11 and 14- The perfect summer handbag

One of the most important accessories to complete your look, your handbag is that star piece that you want to get right. Like shoes, you can tell if a handbag is ethical or sustainable from the materials used in its making, the manufacturing practices followed and the manufacturer’s approach to reducing its manufacturing and product footprint.

I personally love a cute crochet or raffia basket tote, and the Logo Raffia Crochet Tote by Stella McCartney is a beautiful, sustainable piece. It’s made from Iraca palm, a plant that supports soil health and absorbs greenhouse gasses. If you’re looking for something small and fun, Stella’s logo bracelet/bowling shoulder bag could add that touch of responsible luxury to your ensemble.

Item 13 – Sustainable swimwear

Can summer be complete without swimwear?!! We all know the risks our marine life is at. Making sure our swimwear is not made of materials like nylon and polyster that shed microplastics into the oceans and waterways can be a tiny way of helping our precious marine life from further damage.

Swimwear made from materials such ECONYL ( a 100% regenerated nylon fiber crafted from abandoned fishing nets and other discarded ocean plastics) can be a good eco-friendly swimwear option.

This asymmetric reversible swimsuit by Talia Collins is definitely a sustainable luxury piece you can spend sun soaked afternoons in.

Items 15 and 16 – Sustainable jewellery

Sometimes all you need is an elegant piece of jewellery for that extra sparkle. You can go responsible with your jewellery choices as well. When it comes to sustainable jewellery Monica Vinader is one of my favourite brands. With its use of 100% recycled gold and sterling silver, 100% recyclable packaging, reusable pouches, Monica Vinader’s commitment to sustainability is serious. They also offer a lifetime repair service and jewellery recycling scheme. Look up Monica Vinader for some sustainable sparkle!

And on the flix list

I’ve watched it a million times but somehow Dirty Dancing ends up on my screen almost every summer. You can’t go wrong with sweet summer romance, first-dance worthy choreos and learning nobody puts Baby in a corner!

And the final verdict!

Sun-kissed in sustainable summer options you’ll be sure to make heads turn, for a compassionate season never goes out of class!
