How To Rock a Pair of Denims the Sustainable Way

As my debut blog I thought of bringing to you sustainable denim choices you can make to look effortlessly cool and to save our planet tons of litres of water. Yes, estimates show that in average conditions, producing one pair of jeans can take a staggering 3000-4000 litres of water.

So how do we enjoy this wardrobe staple without massively depleting water resources?

Sustainable denims

Intentional action 1: Choose a circular denim brand if you can.

Here are some of the sustainable, circular denim brands that you must absolutely look into.

Mud Jeans- Key highlights

  • Recycled materials: A circular denim brand that uses fabric containing up to 55% post-consumer recycled cotton
  • Lower environmental damage: Reduced water usage by 90% and CO2 emissions by 46.6%
  • Take-back scheme: You can return your denim once you’ve given your pair all your love, and be rewarded with a discount on your next purchase
  • Lease your denim: If you don’t want to buy a pair of jeans you can lease them
  • Cost: Most pairs cost anywhere between £100=£150 (an investment aimed at lasting a long time, and then closing the loop rather than going to landfills)
  • Caters to: Men and women

Personal Experience– I own 2 pairs of MUD Jeans, one that has no stretch and one that is a mid-waist stretchy one (Definitely prefer the stretchy ones :))

Stella McCartney Denims

Definitely a higher investment (£350 being the lowest price for a pair), but if a designer label is what you’re after, Stella’s denim wear made from 100% organic or regenerative cotton is a good way of indulging in some guilt-free luxury.

Other Options

If you’re in the UK, Good On You’s article titled 14 More Ethical and Sustainable Denim Brands Made in the UK (authored by Diana Bunge) is a handy list of responsible brands you can buy from.

Intentional Action 2

Personally as a pear shaped body type I find shopping for trousers really tricky, and I get it, sometimes it takes forever to find the right pair of trousers. So, if after ages you’ve found a pair that fits you just right, the right cut, the right amount of stretch, basically your denim soulmate, but the brand is not necessarily responsible, it’s still better to buy ‘the pair’ that you will enjoy wearing over a long period of time rather than buying multiple pairs that are eco-friendly but will only pile up in your wardrobe. The idea is to reduce the cost per wear not only in terms of financial capital but also natural capital. At the end of its life, make sure the pair finds a new home or is recycled. Also the more locally you buy, the lower your carbon footprint will be, just saying 🙂

3 reasons why choosing sustainable denims makes you a star 🌟

  1. You save water consumption, we can agree there is nothing more precious than water.
  2. You lower carbon footprint and keep textile waste out of landfills
  3. Responsible brands prioritise good working conditions for their employees and transparent supply chains. By choosing a brand like this you are making a social impact as well.

And on the Flix List today:

It’s only fitting to talk about ‘Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants’. I was still a teenager when the movie released but fast forward 20 years, the movie still reminds us of the importance of good friendships and a good pair of jeans!

Final Verdict!

I once read a quote, ‘The love for denim never fades’, let’s make sure, this love is fuelled by compassion, for compassion is classy.

Until the next time,
